LOS ANGELES, CA – In response to Governor Brown’s proposed budget for 2017-18, LAUP issued the following statement.
We understand the need for careful planning and fiscal efficiency in a constrained budget environment and uncertain times; however, we believe all children deserve access to high quality early learning opportunities. Investing in our youngest citizens today leads to stronger families and communities, now and in the future. The need for families to secure quality early care and for providers to receive a reimbursement that reflects the true cost of care is urgent. The Governor’s budget neither reflects this urgency, nor does it reflect the full budget commitment to early care and education that was made last June.
“We look forward to working in the coming months with the Governor, the Legislature, and fellow advocates on a state budget that improves the lives of Californians – particularly those of our children,” said Scott Hippert, LAUP CEO. “We also reiterate our commitment to champion investments and policies that elevate the quality of early learning programs, enable parents and caregivers to work, and set children on a track to be successful in school and in life.”
